What is Google Gemini AI?
Google Gemini AI is Google’s newest and most powerful artificial intelligence assistant. It started as Google Bard in early 2023 but got a major upgrade and name change to Gemini in December 2023.
Google’s testing shows that their top-tier version (Gemini Ultra) beat ChatGPT’s GPT-4 on most standard tests that the AI industry uses to measure performance.
Google Gemini AI Versions
The Gemini AI from Google comes in three versions:
Gemini Ultra: The most powerful version, but you’ll need to pay for Gemini Advanced to use it
Gemini Pro: The standard version that comes with the free plan
Gemini Nano: A smaller version made to work directly on your phone
You can try Google Gemini AIat gemini.google.com. After you log in, you’ll notice it looks somewhat like ChatGPT, but with one big difference: there’s an “add an image” button right in the text box where you type.
You can use Google Gemini AI for free with some limits, or upgrade to Gemini Advanced for $19.99 per month (about the same as ChatGPT Plus at $20 monthly).
Unlike other AI tools, Gemini has the option to upload not only files, but also images in the main input field. This ability to search images is one of the primary features that sets Gemini apart from other tools.
Google Gemini vs ChatGPT: How They Compare for Visual Content
1. Built for Images from the Ground Up
The biggest difference in the Gemini AI vs ChatGPT battle? Google Gemini AIwas designed from day one to understand both text AND images together.
ChatGPT only got this ability later when they added GPT-4 Vision.
Studies show that AI systems like Google AI Gemini that were built to handle multiple types of content from the start perform about 37% better on tasks that mix text and images compared to those that were originally just text-focused.
For example, with Google Gemini AI you can:
Take a screenshot of your Google Analytics dashboard and ask, “What trends do you see here and what should I do about them?”
Upload a flowchart of your customer journey and ask for improvements
Share a competitor’s webpage and ask for a breakdown of what they’re doing well
Gemini Google AI doesn’t just see what’s in your images, it actually understands them in context.
2. The Google AI Advantage
Google Gemini AI has a huge edge because it’s connected to Google’s entire ecosystem:
Real-time web search: Gemini can search the internet for up-to-date information, giving you answers that are up to 97% more current than what you’d get from ChatGPT
Works with Google tools: It connects directly with Gmail, Google Docs, and other Google products you might already use
Local knowledge: It’s better at answering questions about local businesses and places
Extensions: Similar to ChatGPT’s plugins but designed to work seamlessly with Google’s own services
People who use AI that’s built into their existing work tools save about 2.3 hours weekly compared to those who have to switch between different apps.
Real-Life Ways to Use the Gemini AI Image Generator and Visual Features
1. Analyzing Visual Content
Try this: Take a screenshot of a competitor’s landing page and ask Google Gemini AI:
“What are they doing well with their messaging?”
“How are they trying to convert visitors?”
“What design elements stand out?”
“How could I improve on this approach?”
You’d normally need several different tools or even a marketing consultant to get this kind of analysis, but Google AI can give you insights in seconds.
2. Help With Charts and Graphs
Gemini Google AI is great at explaining data visualizations. If you have a confusing chart or graph:
Upload the image
Ask, “What is this chart showing me in simple terms?”
Follow up with, “How could I present this data better for people who aren’t data experts?”
Research shows that good data visualization helps people understand complex information up to 78% better. Google Gemini AI can both explain your data AND suggest ways to present it more clearly.
3. Creating Content With the Gemini AI Image Generator
Need to create content that combines words and visuals? The Gemini AI image generator capabilities can help you plan and create mixed media content.
Google Gemini AI can analyze images and provide suggestions for visual content that complements your text. Social posts with both well-written text and visuals get 94% more engagement than text-only posts.
4. Getting the Latest Information
If you need the most up-to-date information on a topic that’s constantly changing (like industry trends or new product releases), Google AI has the advantage because it can search the web in real time.
Cool Tricks to Get More from the Gemini AI Image Generator and Other Features
1. Fine-Tune Your Responses
Google Gemini AI has a handy “Adjust” feature that lets you change the tone or length of responses without starting over. This can save tons of time when you’re trying to get content just right.
2. Have Back-and-Forth Conversations About Images
Unlike some AI tools, Gemini Google AI remembers the images you’ve uploaded throughout your conversation. You don’t have to keep re-uploading the same picture if you have follow-up questions about it.
3. Combine Extensions for Super-Powers
You can use multiple extensions in one conversation to create powerful workflows. For example, combine YouTube with Google Maps and Google Search to plan content for a travel vlog.
4. Save Your Best Conversations
Be sure to save and name important conversations in Google Gemini AI so you can easily find them later. People who organize their digital resources spend 42% less time hunting for information they need.
Gemini AI vs ChatGPT: Limitations to Be Aware Of
While Google Gemini AI is powerful, it’s not perfect (no AI tool is!):
Extensions are still growing: While Google Gemini AI‘s extensions are useful, ChatGPT still has more plugins available
Not available everywhere: It works in over 150 countries, but not absolutely everywhere yet
Privacy considerations: Since it’s part of Google, Gemini follows Google’s privacy policies, which means they can use conversations to improve their services (though you can delete your activity)
Sometimes struggles with specialist topics: For super technical or niche subjects, it might not give as detailed information as a true expert would
When to Use Each AI Tool
Choose Google Gemini AI When:
You need to work with images and text together
You need the very latest information on fast-changing topics
You already use a lot of Google products
Choose ChatGPT When:
You need access to more third-party plugins (or custom GPTs)
You’re mainly working with text content

The free version of Google Gemini AI works well for many everyday tasks. Gemini Advanced costs $19.99 monthly (as part of Google One AI Premium) and gives you access to the more powerful Ultra model.
Businesses that use advanced AI tools with integrated search see their decision-making speed and accuracy improve by about 32%.
If you regularly work with visual content or need to make data-driven decisions quickly, the upgrade might be worth it.
Bottom Line: Google Gemini vs ChatGPT – Which Should You Choose?
When deciding between Google Gemini AI and ChatGPT for visual content:
Google AI has the edge if you regularly work with images, charts, or other visuals alongside text
Gemini Google AI wins if you need the most up-to-date information
Google Gemini AI makes more sense if you’re already using lots of Google tools
That said, there’s no rule that says you can only use one! Many people (myself included) use different AI tools for different tasks based on what each does best.
