I'm so glad you're here, stick around, there's so much to learn! -Sarah
Did you know that according to HubSpot, updating old blog posts can increase Google ranking and boost traffic by over 100%? … Yet most content marketing strategies ignore this goldmine, focusing only on creating new material while existing content collects digital dust!
Creating brand new content isn’t always the best way to rank on Google faster. 🤯
Sometimes the fastesr path to boost your Google ranking, get more traffic, leads, and sales is actually through a strategic content refresh of what you already have.
We don’t have to reinvent the wheel with our content marketing strategy! Sometimes we just need to polish the hubcaps. 💁♀️
If you’re freaking exhausted from constantly creating and want smarter ways to increase Google ranking, I’m about to pull back the curtain on why updating old content works so well, showing you exactly how to update, optimize, and repurpose your content so it works harder for you without the extra effort.
Let’s start with a mindset shift that completely transformed my content marketing strategy.
For years, I was caught in what I call the content hamster wheel… constantly creating new pieces, publishing them, getting a brief spike in traffic, and then watching them fade into obscurity as I moved on to the next thing.
Sound familiar? It’s freaking exhausting, right?

Then I had this realization: I was sitting on a treasure trove of content I’d already created!
And it was all just sitting there, collecting digital dust. This realization completely changed how I approach content marketing.
The data on why updating old content works is absolutely mind-blowing.
Did you know that 53% of marketers have observed higher engagement rates after a content refresh? And 49% reported increased traffic from updated content?
And here’s the BIG one: (and this is huge for anyone looking to rank on Google faster!) … refreshed content often climbs in search rankings faster than brand-new posts. This is one of the most underutilized strategies to boost Google ranking in the content marketing world.
Think about it this way: If you have 50 blog posts on your website, and each one gets just 10 visitors per month, that’s 500 monthly visitors.
But what if your content update strategy could revamp those posts so each one brought in 100 visitors per month? Suddenly, without creating anything new, you’re at 5,000 monthly visitors! 💥💥
Let’s do some quick math: If you have a strong call to action in every blog post and you’re converting at the industry average of 3%, with 500 visitors you’d get 15 sales per month.
But with 5,000 visitors after your content refresh? That jumps to 150 sales per month. You just 10x’d your sales without creating a single new piece of content! 🤯
This approach isn’t just more efficient, it’s also a smarter content marketing strategy. Creating new content from scratch is time-consuming and expensive. Remember, your time has value too!
Refreshing existing content is often more cost-effective and provides a higher return on investment. You’ve already done the hard work of creating the initial framework.
Now you’re just optimizing it to increase Google ranking and drive better results.
Before diving into revitalization, you need to identify which content pieces have the highest potential to boost Google ranking.
Here’s my streamlined three-step content audit process:
Review your existing content’s current performance using Google Analytics. Look for pieces already getting traffic, those with high engagement (time on page, low bounce rate), and those that have generated leads or sales.
For YouTube, check watch time and retention rate.
For podcasts, review download numbers and completion rates.
Create a spreadsheet ranking all content by current performance as your baseline.
Evaluate which pieces have the highest potential for improvement.
Look for:
Google Search Console is invaluable here. It shows what keywords your content already ranks for, even if not on page one.
Content ranking on pages 2-3 for valuable keywords has excellent potential to rank on Google faster with a strategic refresh.
For each high-potential piece, identify what’s missing:
By the end of this process, you’ll have a prioritized list of content ranked by both current performance and future potential.
Congratulations! 🎉 You just build your roadmap for content revitalization that will deliver the biggest SEO boost.
Once you’ve identified your high-potential content, it’s time for the revitalization process. Think of it like a makeover for your content that will help it rank on Google faster!
Here’s my easy five-step framework for bringing your old content back to life and maximizing its potential to increase Google ranking.
This is the foundation of any effective content refresh strategy. Go through your content and verify that all the facts and statistics are current.
Update any outdated information, add any new developments or insights that have emerged since you published it, expand any sections that feel a little thin or could provide more value, and remove anything that’s no longer relevant.
For example, if you wrote a blog post about Instagram marketing strategies in 2019, holy outdated Batman!
You’re going to want to update it with information about Reels, new algorithm changes, and current best practices.
According to Snap Agency, updating old posts ensures that readers receive current and accurate information, which enhances your credibility and improves user satisfaction.
And ultimately, satisfied users are much more likely to become customers, plus Google rewards comprehensive, accurate content with higher rankings.
Even if your content was originally optimized for search, SEO, just like everything else, evolves over time.
A proper content refresh needs to address these changes to boost Google ranking.
I’ve talked about this in previous posts, but make sure you’re not leading your reader to dead ends, because dead ends lead to them leaving your site.
A really powerful approach to increase Google ranking is to look at what’s currently ranking on page one for your target keyword. What topics did those pieces cover that yours doesn’t? What format are they using? What questions do they answer? This can give you a blueprint for what Google considers comprehensive for that topic.
Refreshing your outdated content allows you to incorporate better keywords, potentially helping you rank on Google faster.
Research from Orbit Media and The Blogsmith found that bloggers who regularly refresh their content are twice as likely to report strong results compared to those who don’t.
That’s a pretty compelling reason to make content updates part of your regular content marketing strategy!
Google increasingly prioritizes user experience in its rankings, so make your content more reader-friendly as part of your content refresh.
Break up those long paragraphs! Nobody wants to read a wall of text. Add bullet points, and numbered lists, break up text with images, diagrams, or videos.
For a very long piece, consider adding a table of contents so people can jump to the section they’re looking for. And make sure your content is mobile-friendly. Over 80% of your readers are on their phones!!
All these user experience improvements signal to Google that your content is valuable, which can help you rank on Google faster and boost your rankings even further.
Remember, Google’s goal is to provide the best possible answers to users’ questions, so making your content more accessible helps align your goals with Google’s.
This is where you’re making your content not just informative, but truly valuable to increase Google ranking.
Consider adding an interactive element like a quiz or calculator, a downloadable resource like a template or checklist, an expert quote or insights, original research or data, or step-by-step tutorials with screenshots or videos.
The goal of this step in your content refresh is to make your content so helpful and useful to your ideal customer that Google can’t help but recognize its value.
Google’s algorithms are increasingly sophisticated at identifying content that genuinely helps users, so this step is crucial for anyone looking to boost Google ranking through content updates.
A lot of your older content pieces probably either completely lack a call to action or might have one that’s no longer relevant.
You may even be pointing to an offer you no longer have or another piece of content that is no longer relevant to your reader.
Make sure when updating old content that you include a relevant and compelling call to action.
Add a content upgrade that directly relates to the topic, and consider including multiple call-to-actions for different stages of the buyer’s journey.
You can also test different call-to-action placements and formats. For example, you could have CTAs at both the top and bottom of your article.
Once you’ve completed these five steps, it’s time for the final piece of your content refresh strategy… republishing and re-promoting.
When you republish updated content, make sure to update the last modified date if your system allows it. Consider adding a note explaining that the content has been updated.
Share the revitalized content across your social media, in your email newsletter, and maybe even consider running paid promotion to give it a little boost.
This republishing process signals to both readers and search engines that your content is fresh and relevant, which is essential if you want to rank on Google faster.
Fresh content is one of the signals Google uses to determine ranking, so this simple step can give your content a significant boost.
Let’s look at some real data from Neil Patel’s website showing how content revitalization boosts Google ranking. Neil is one of the most respected names in digital marketing whose blog gets millions of visitors monthly.
Neil’s team refreshed three older blog posts using strategies similar to what I’ve shared. Here are their impressive results:
They updated terminology (from “ghost banning” to “shadow banning”), refined keyword targeting, and improved metadata.
The Results: Clicks jumped 83% immediately, and over five months they saw a 96% increase from 27,000 to 53,000 clicks.
Their keyword reach expanded from 1,900 to 2,500 keywords, with triple the number in top positions.
The Results: This refresh had mixed results. Clicks declined by 20%, but only because interest in the topic itself had declined. Their keyword rankings and impressions still improved, proving the content refresh strategy worked even when topic popularity changed.
The Results: This update resulted in a 38% click increase over five months. Before refreshing, traffic had been steadily declining, but afterward it surged to 729 clicks in a single day.
The key takeaway? Content refreshes consistently improve ranking signals, even if some work better than others depending on topic trends.
Most impressively, all three saw improvements the VERY NEXT DAY after publishing updates.
This isn’t a strategy where you wait months for results; you’ll see immediate benefits while the long-term advantages continue to grow.
Wondering which content to update first to rank on Google faster? Focus on “quick wins” (aka: content with untapped potential that can deliver fast results with minimal effort).
Look for content that:
Not sure where to start? Check your top 5 posts by traffic and top 5 posts by conversions. If they haven’t been updated in over a year, they’re prime candidates for a content refresh.
The beauty of this approach? Improving content already ranking on page 2 takes far less effort than getting brand new content to rank from scratch.
It’s the smart way to boost Google ranking with less work.
